A hearty pearl barley soup from Karla's family cookbook (2014) – the first of two variations on the same page, made with smoked pork and fresh vegetables.

Method
Dice the Kassler, chop the vegetables finely.
Add the pearl barley to the meat stock and start cold.
Bring everything slowly to the boil and simmer gently for 30 minutes.
Add the clove-studded onion during cooking, remove before serving.
Season to taste with salt and freshly ground pepper.
