Fennel Gratin
The story
A simple gratin from Karla's family cookbook (2014) – fennel baked with ham and cheese, with the chopped fennel fronds used as a fresh garnish.

Method
Halve the fennel bulbs and cook until tender. Remove the stalks, finely chop the green fronds and set aside to scatter over at the end.
Mix together the cheese, breadcrumbs, pepper, salt, and crème fraîche.
Place the fennel halves in an ovenproof dish. Distribute the ham strips over the top.
Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the fennel.
Grill until the cheese mixture is golden brown. Serve with rice.
